Town Meeting: First Night

May 3, 2011

Devereux Beach Playground erected by the Marblehead Family Fund in 1999.

Town Meeting, with a good attendance, approved $70.8 million in budgets, $668,000 to renovate the Old Town House and make it accessible under current codes and laws (571-45), a no smoking ban on Devereux Beach Playground. The Town also voted to remove the traditionally selected from the ranks police chief from civil service and allow the Selectmen to appoint as they see fit for three year terms. This bylaw will be first used when the current chief retires.

The meeting will resume again tonight at 7:45 p.m at the Veterans Middle School beginning with Article 32.

Jack Buba, a well-known naysayer when it comes to any Proposition Override, handed out leaflets opposing all overrides again this year. Jonathan Lederman made a motion to expand the smoking ban to all of the beach, but, sadly, it was defeated. At least the kids are safer… as long as they stay away from the beach and swimming.
