Big Brother Enrolls in MHS

September 21, 2011

Sometimes leading the state is a mixed blessing. Marblehead has joined only three other communities that have installed observation cameras throughout a school. By a vote of the School Committee and in cooperation with the fire department and a citizen group, Marblehead Cares, 23 cameras will be installed in Marblehead High School. The program also includes two portable blood testing kits and a laptop computer. Ostensibly because of “vandalism” the cameras and kits also obviously bring other capabilities. The only other facilities with more surveillance capacity may be the state’s prisons. The funding came from a grant. “Cameras will allow the police to identify those involved in risky behavior, ensure that exit doors are locked, and identify criminal activity and take action.”1

All eyes will be on the schools.
