Shalane reminisces about her Marblehead days and sees the Boston Marathon in her future.

June 15, 2012

Shalane Flanagan has gotten the attention of the whole world but finds her attention wandering back to her days in the halls of Marblehead High School. (Who can blame her?)

“My experience in Marblehead High School was just great. In general, it was a really great community to be raised in and supported by coaches and teachers,” she said.1 She recalled the warmth of her parents’ hugs in victory and in disappointment and credit their support with much of her success.

On the Olympics in London she seemed to be excited at the opportunity and confident that all of her training and planning would pay off. She is also planning to run in a second Olympic qualifier in Duluth for the 10,000 meters.

This is a young woman with game. And, oh, yes, she as promised to followup whatever happens in London with a run she has dreamed of making since she was a little girl: The Boston Marathon. “It’s a way for me to give back to the community I love and I will know a lot of the faces along the way. I’s so motivating, it tears at my heart.”

Obviously, just thinking about this hometown girl, shining in the Olympics and then running in front of our Boston Marathon tears at the hearts of all of us too. We can’t wait to see you again, Shalane.
